Avoid Frozen Meters & Pipes

Colder weather is here and that brings the potential for frozen pipes and meters.  Here are simple steps you can take to make sure you can weather the cold.

  • Wrap pipes and water meters located in unheated areas with insulation or heat tape.
  • *If you are going to be away for an extended period of time, plan accordingly. We recommend pulling the meter and draining the pipes if there will be no heat left on.  Call our office at least 24 hrs ahead of time and we will schedule a technician to meet your plumber to pull the meter and shut the water off.  If you wish to leave the meter installed, we suggest lowering the heat but not shutting it off completely.  The lack of heat can freeze the pipes and the meter, causing them to break/burst.  This could result in a large amount of damage and expense. Replacing a frozen meter can cost the customer up to $175.00.
  • Insulate or repair any areas exposing pipes to below freezing temperatures or wind.
  • Make sure outdoor spickets are off and drained.

If your pipes should become frozen, use a hair dryer on low and wave it back and forth along the pipe.

Please call our office with questions or concerns at (207) 729-9956.  We have a standby technician on-call if you experience a problem outside of normal business hours.

*A charge of $40.00 will be assessed for the removal and re-installation of seasonal meters during business hours.
