Interior Shut Off Valves
There are two main types of water shut off valves:
Gate Valves | Ball Valves |

Gate valves are more common in older homes (circa 1970s and older), while ball valves are the standard for newer homes.
Ball valves have a small ball inside with a hole through the middle, which rotates by 90 degrees to open and close the water when the handle is used.
A gate valve controls the flow of water with a metal gate inside that raises and lowers when the handle is turned.
